Despite some orientation problems at the start of the book I have to say that the more I read, the more compelling I found it. It has taught me a lot about the nature of trauma in children and how it manifests into ‘well behaved’ children which is the opposite of what a child should be. Yes, it may make an outing to a restaurant easier to enjoy but it stifles the child leaving them with an unfulfilled desire for validation, for love, to be accepted. During my 20s, cults tried to recruit me with worrying regularity on the streets of Dublin. Loathe as I was to admit it at the time, my Catholic education came in handy. In the ’70s and ’80s, there was worry about the Moonies in particular, so education about cults and how they pulled people in was provided in schools and at retreats.

I don’t want to write some sort of salacious review of this book because, as I had to keep checking, this is non-fiction and consequently someone’s life. Bexy’s story was so readable and addictive that I kept having to remind myself that this was in fact, non-fiction and not some terrifying made up plot. Genius is the ultimate source of music knowledge, created by scholars like you who share facts and insight about the songs and artists they love. David Lynch’s Twin Peaks ran on ABC for two seasons from 1990 to 1991, initially garnering high ratings and critical acclaim. However, ratings and reception declined following the reveal of Laura Palmer’s murderer, who was left intentionally unknown by Lynch. Eventually, the show was canceled, ending on a cliffhanger. It was not until 2017 that Twin Peaks returned as a limited series on Showtime, ending one of the longest hiatus in television history. I think a lot of people wait for “the perfect moment” to “feel ready” to have the “right resources”.
They are generally highly autocratic and use well-known tactics such as extreme gaslighting, sleep deprivation, and overwork to keep people in line. They tend to follow the personal preferences of their leader or founder, which can be idiosyncratic or downright corrupt, but for the purposes of the cult, are turned into sacred practices. At 10 she spent a whole year in silent reflection, no talking or eye contact to be made with anyone and she was completely isolated from her friends and family while being in a thriving commune. The neglect and damage this punishment had on Bexy was horrific.
This responsibility is overwhelming AHHHHHHHH hahahaha GOSH. Asking me these kinds of questions will never get you a straight answer. I believe we are all given gifts and talents for a reason!??! I remind myself all the time about how lucky I am to be born into the Western world, privileged, with resources and opportunities at my fingertips to achieve anything I set my mind to. PLUS how blessed I am to have found something that gives me so much passion and purpose. It’s an absolute privilege and I do not want to take it for granted. Mostly because I’m still learning and most days feel like I’m not sure what I’m doing. So this “advice” is more just me ranting to myself haha.

Genius is the worlds biggest collection of song lyrics and musical knowledge

In this book, she details not only her time growing up in Children of God, but also her quest to understand more about new religious movements by going on a road trip in the U.S. and staying in some communities. Both narratives are fascinating in their own ways, though there is a constant sense of my wondering why she would put herself through all of these triggering experiences with further cults after the upbringing she has escaped. She explains at one point that her therapist has told her this is a normal reaction to the constant trauma she was subjected to as a child. He was a known abuser of children; many women in the cult were instructed for a number of years to be ‘prostitutes for Jesus’ and became sex workers to make money to support the communes. There have been various court cases related to the paedophiles who inevitably were drawn to the cult and given free reign. Of the children born into the cult who manage to escape, a shocking 30% end up taking their own lives. Without any education to draw on, many of the young women who have left have relied on sex work to survive. Cameron’s global film making spans art, fashion, music, female empowerment and global warming and has worked with major international brands such as Nike, Adidas, Converse and YouTube. Growing up in the notorious cult, Children of God, has clearly not held her back.
I found this book truly fascinating as cults have always been interesting to me. In this book Bexy shares her childhood growing up in the Child of God. Reading what Bexy went through as a child is heartbreaking, and reading about her journey after leaving is truly inspiring. When you discover that your entire world is based upon a lie, how do you begin to pick up the pieces and move ahead?

All they knew was that I should ‘come to a meeting’ to be love-bombed, and then understanding would inevitably follow (I never did, so it didn’t). Well, it all started with a random night in the studio with some new friends, drinking gin and tonic and sharing a little too much information. This song is about when you know someone is bad for you in a way, but your heart utterly adores them so you struggle to ever stay away from them. This song is about the constant battle you have with your head and your heart. At the moment music is my number one and I don’t want to get distracted but it’s hard when special humans wander into your life. But also I need to live my life to have things to write about so ya know ha ha. I’m heading into a very contradictory and confusing season.

The scars left as an adult and the proof that you have to find your own version of peace in this life. My only criticism would be that her personal experiences in the cult and post-cult could have been explored further, but it may be that she does not want to share that much. I found it smart, then, that Bexy Cameron chose to intercut her memoir of her own cult upbringing with journalistic stories of other cults. Indeed, if Cameron were a better journalist and this book had been more tightly edited, it might have been fantastic. The thing that I found most baffling was the sexual child abuse allegations which were targeted at both the Children of God and most of the other cults which she visited. However, I found both the writing style and the structure somewhat chaotic.

Ultimately Cult Following is a fascinating story, the fact this is a memoir and not a work of fiction has to put it mildly been at times hard to process. The unbelievable amount of courage and curiosity it must have taken to rebel, leave, confront and forgive her past is something I am in complete awe of. Bexy Cameron is a real-world superhero for her sheer love, generosity and courage it has taken her to carve a life for herself despite her origins. The protectiveness she feels for those around her, especially the children in the multiple cults she visits warmed my heart and left me feeling devastated for the children who are alive right now living in these systems. 🎧 It doesn’t matter how much I read or watch on the subject of religious cults I just can’t get enough. I’m so intrigued by how the different groups think and what they believe and how they come to be. This one is brilliantly written but disturbing and heart wrenching at the same time. You really have to keep it in mind that this isn’t fiction this is someone’s life experience and to have it narrated by Bexy Cameron herself really adds to the listen. You feel like you are on the road trip with Bexy and where your given a real insight in to other religious groups I do feel that it needed to delve deeper into Bexys story itself. I felt I needed more but overall a really good listen that I won’t forget for awhile.

All I can do is be authentic and create what feels right in the moment, try my best and surrender to the rest. So what if someone saves my face and starts making fun of it or uses it as their pfp to write some bad stuff on internet and accuse me of it. The influence you can have in people’s lives, the way you can contribute to something bigger than yourself. It’s one of the most powerful industries out there. It makes life very very interesting and meaningful. Christchurch-based indie-pop artist BEXY is definitely one to watch. The product will be dispatched in 14 days, after approval from Kissht. After seeing Bexxy talk about her experience of escaping the Children of God and the process of creating the book, I knew I had to read it.

The American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails released their 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine to modest success on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 75. It developed an underground popularity in subsequent years and sold enough to receive a platinum RIAA certification in 1995, becoming one of the first independently released albums to accomplish the feat. Also in 1989, Nirvana’s debut album Bleach was released to some positive notice from critics, but failed to impact record charts, until the band’s massively successful 1991 album Nevermind drew further interest to it. This was a brave and courageous outpouring from Bexy who had endured her young life within a notorious cult. She has to struggle to regain her sanity and the book goes between her childhood and adult struggles to lead a ‘normal’ life. The switch between different time periods is a little confusing at first, but the book was very interesting and thought provoking. Devastating and shocking, this is a disturbing read.

The fact that is a true story and someone’s actual history is heartbreaking. The writing style did jump around a bit, with 2 parallel timelines, which I found slightly confusing at times. Given the subject matter of the book, I am loathe to say that I enjoyed it, but what I will say is that I found it incredibly moving. Sat on my feelings of this book for a little while as to me it came as a tale of two stories.

It was ordered as I walked home from the event and devoured. Read more about sell link here. In terms of the style, Cameron’s writing leans heavily on sensuous descriptions and purple prose. (The ayahuasca chapter is just as bad as you think it’s gonna be.) All this ‘I’m a writerrrr, watch me wriiiiite’ energy seems to come at the expense of real emotion. Cameron’s audiobook narration is similarly flat; I struggled to feel much of anything while I was listening. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in cults. For a wider audience I am not sure how interesting it will be. But I should say that the online reviews are generally much more positive than mine. Most probably, not all of these groups could be classed as cults, but the Children of God definitely could. Experts have long recognized specific characteristics that can reliably define groups as cults.

What I had thought of as the ’60s and early ’70s really comprised a few fascinating cultural moments and figures that were only one small part of the tapestry of the time period. Some of this romanticizing of that time may have come from being a generation Xer whose parents were not baby boomers, but the silent generation. College contemporaries whose parents had record collections comprising all of Woodstock’s most famous performers and beyond were not particuarly fussed about the ’60s. I wasn’t so interested in her exploration of other cults and when it started going into that is when I stopped. The language was very descriptive which I’m sure many readers love, but I’m not one of them. Whilst I wish it had gone into a little more depth at times, overall this was an insightful and enlightening, memoir I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. It is a journey of meth cooks, monks, Jesus Freaks, soap-making Armageddonists, surveillance vans and finally, confronting her parents and herself. I do not own these songs, they are just some really amazing songs that I found on Youtube or heard on the radio. Bexy was raised in The Children of God, an infamous cult that was certainly no place for a child. Here she has detailed what it was like, the things she endured, punishments she suffered and how she began to lose her sense of self along the way. A heart-breaking but interesting read, I found the treatment by her parents and their blind loyalty to “the cause” the most difficult part to understand. For me personally, I’m not sure the interwoven narrative around other cults was necessarily needed, I think her own personal story alone was compelling enough. I would have liked her own narrative to have covered a bit more ground, and have found out more about how her siblings and Maria developed their own lives after leaving the Children of God. Bexy was born into the Children of God, one of the world’s most notorious cults. She was 9 years old when she experienced her first exorcism, held in a secret commune deep in the British countryside.

  • Her parents, Martin and Linda met at university but ended up abandoning ‘normal life’ and joining the cult.
  • Being born too late to have experienced it was an injustice I felt keenly, as I went to Indian boutiques in town to buy long flowy skirts and second-hand shops for clothing with tassels.
  • Long ago bexy was a little demon girl just always happy but one day had gone terrible Bexy did not mean to kill her brother when she had a panic attack that no one knew…
  • Reading what Bexy went through as a child is heartbreaking, and reading about her journey after leaving is truly inspiring.

In this conversation, she recounts some of the unbelievable things that she’s been through, and offers rare perspective on the most earth-shattering changes imaginable. It was an extraordinary and heart-breaking story, I loved the way she intertwined her own biography with her own journalistic journey investigating other cults. The bit that hit home the most was when she didn’t know what she wanted to be when she grew up. It is such a simple question that in engrained into society, every child knows what they want to be. Many cult fans express their devotion with a level of irony when describing entertainment that falls under this realm, in that something is so bad, it is good. Sometimes, these cult followings cross the border to camp followings. An excellent memoir about Bexy Cameron’s childhood in the Children of God cult in the UK and her subsequent escape. Alongside these memories of her trauma and the story of how the cult came to be and how her parents got involved with it, in the present day Bexy investigates current communes and cults to try to make sense of them and her own past. Moving, deeply fascinating, Bexy Cameron writes so eloquently about the impact the past has had on her and while the cult’s grim grip of power is disturbing to read, the structure of the novel makes it vivid and compelling.

Arrested Development, which was cancelled in 2006 after its third season, was renewed by Netflix in 2013 and received two additional seasons. Star Trek was cancelled after three seasons, but in broadcast syndication it gained a more substantial following, ultimately spawning a successful media franchise. Of course, I’m a little biased, but if I didn’t believe in it and the company, I wouldn’t still be here. The Moshi app is by far my favourite parenting tool.
Moshi has been the absolute miracle for us, it saved us from so many sleepless nights and the walking around like ‘a zombie’ days! For all the parents out there, with a child with a neurodevelopmental condition or even neurotypical, the advice I can give is to persevere. I’m so glad I didn’t give up with the app on the first try of a story with Elliot and that I explored different areas. It’s working so much better than I could have ever imagined, and his temperament and frustrating moments are all the better for it. Long after her escape from the cult and now a successful film-maker, Bexy could no longer ignore her need for answers to questions that had haunted her for a decade. Can these places so renowned for evil ever be a force for good as their acolytes so fervently believe they are? Determined to find peace, she set off on a road trip across America to explore the hold cults still hold today. Both would have been quite interesting in themselves but, for me, the combination didn’t quite work. How do you review someone’s life, especially a life where your childhood is taken from you?
